Looper wins sofubi of the year at Designer Toy Awards? Way to maintain your street cred, DTAs. I'm sure Deadbeet was second.

In the category all about Japanese vinyl, only one of the nine finalists was Japanese. This is like when Jethro Tull won the Grammy for best heavy metal band.

Sofubi seems to be getting more and more trendy these days. Maybe collectors are getting tired of Kidrobot.
    Still, REAL sofubi is Japanese.

This was made in Japan by Japanese sofubi makers...

Yes, you're right. I keep forgetting that sofubi is a method and not a style, sorry.

Sketch I'm sure they were all made in Japan, because that's basically what sofubi means. But only one of the artists was Japanese, Restore who designed Debris Japan. Did Gargamel, Elegab, Cure, M1GO, Blobpus, Secret Base, et cetera get a look?

Looper might be sofubi but it's not Sofubi.

Actually, sofubi means 'soft vinyl' not 'made in japan' anyone can make a sofubi. Thus, they don't necessarily need to be japanese.

Ya. Sofubi is a type of material. For example, deal maker is by Andrew bell and my plastic heart, both in New York, however it is still a sofubi figure because it is cast in soft vinyl.

I know what sofubi is! Missing my point! But we're on the internet so that's bound to happen!

    I hear you Shank.

I know they don't need to be Japanese...but so many amazing original Japanese sofubi artists/pieces were terribly overlooked for the awards. Other categories were like that as well...the nature of the beast I suppose.

Not saying the Looper isn't amazing...just, spread the love XD

Isn't Designer Toy Awards basically the Western part of the toy world celebrating itself? Maybe it's not that big a surprise after all that only one real Japanese toy was nominated?
Personally I don't give a shit about DTA. When I heard you were suppossed to vote every fucking day I lost interest. Also, my favourite blog is Lowbrownie, which was actually nominated, I think, but it has no chance in winning ever, since the blog isn't plastered with ads and gets way lesser hits each day than
    for example Vinylpulse.

Awards are for losers! (Get it?)

I can understand where you're coming from, Shank. I love Japanese toys.
Yeah, I guess like Jan I approach the DTAs kind of like the Oscars in that they're basically western.
I collect Japanese toys and despite the internets parts of the toy world there is very hard to approach from out of Japan - both in terms of info and certainly in terms of getting the toys.

The fact that the DTAs lacked Japanese creators in a category about Japanese vinyl is the issue. A big issue in my opinion.

I wanted to add Japanese artists in the first round but gave up after I uploaded a batch and only to see one added: Chima Group

I also lost interest after having to vote every single day. How can anyone compete against someone like Jason Freeny with 42k facebook fans?
