Q: What's the difference between this figure and a LEGO Minifigure - or a Kubrick?
A: Hmmmm... er..... uhmmm...... -

Lego kicks ass and Playmobil does not? ;)

I think we're allowed to make distinctions based on other criteria. We can just decide this doesn't belong, regardless of the similarities it has with other toys in the database. We keep taking these baby steps away from the originals: what's the difference between Kubrick and Lego, what's the difference between Lego and Playmobil, what's the difference between Playmobil and...Fisher-Price Little People? Is that next?

When the Playmobil sets were added a few days ago people were in a tizzy, which seemed confusing to me because we do have quite a few Lego figures in the Roto library. It was explained that the Lego figures are from the minifig blindbags, which many people collect. Adding several Playmobil playsets is a little too much. Understandable. Now these Playmobil figures are being uploaded with generally the same idea- they are collectable minifigures, blindbagged, and they come in a series. Yet it's still unacceptable? Maybe this is my inner Libra speaking- everything has to be fair and equal- but what's the difference between having these figs in the Library and the Lego figs?

I believe that both Lego and Playmobil sets shouldn't be allowed on here, because they are both very different from being a designer toy.
A designer toy is designed by an artist with a purpose to make it, and is usually commercial in the designer toy market. An example is Bounty Hunter's Kid Hunter figure. It is, in my honest opinion, the benchmark designer toy. It was made by a t-shirt company (Bounty Hunter) and was made to advertise their new designer clothing line. This already checks off two things on the list, a designer and a purpose. You might argue that it was the toy that established the market as a whole (being the first designer toy ever), but at least it was a part of a specific market for specific people. Also, you may argue that Lego and Playmobil both cater to the toy market as well. But, as I stated before, it was catered to a different kind of market. -

Everyone makes good points. Honestly I think that Playmobil doesn't fall under the "designer toy" category, but blind-bagged toys are in the spirit of the designer toy and should be permitted. On the other hand, it's generally accepted that designer toys aren't meant for children, or at least weren't created to target that audience. Playmobil toys are created for one purpose, and that's for kids to play with. Sure, there is always someone collecting just about anything, but they weren't originally intended for collectors like designer toys are.

Very valid points, from a personal point of view I don't believe LEGO should be on here either!
It's not a designer toy, its just a toy, designed for and played with by children…admittedly Adults collect them too but they also collect china plates and they're not on here.
I think some clear lines need to be drawn and pretty firmly on the side of no PlayMobil -

Either its a toy site, or a designer toy site, simple.
But if its a designer toy site, and lego and playmobil go, then so should all that pop-vinyl funko rubbish, and maybe even the kidrobot licensed stuff, its no different.
I don't really care either way. I love all toys. But someone needs to define the content of the site, to stop this pointless debate. Sergey where are you? -
10 years ago
@jazzydan I do believe that Funko and licensed Kidrobot should be allowed on here, because they are aimed towards the designer toy market.
And, to everyone else, non-designer toys can be blind boxed too. Lego has its own blind box series, and it isn't a designer toy. Right? -
10 years ago
Funko vinyls are based on comics and films, atractive for collectors. Lego sometimes too. But playmobil? What represents? A pirate, a princess, a nurse...

The Rotocasted library is "for the love of toys".
If it was strictly for "designer toys" half of the library should be deleted - including Ashley Wood action figures!!!
I personally think that it is Rotocasted's force that we have several different categories - and not just that vague (and in my eyes outdated) term : Designer Toy.
I love ALL toys, but I mostly collect Japanese stuff. Nevertheless I really don't have any issues about having Funko vinyl figures, Hot Toys action figures, Kidrobot keychains etc., etc. in the library.
Regarding the Playmobil; people are now adding them to their have and want lists!
Peace! -

Ashley wood is a designer/artist, his toys are not (for the most part) based on licensed properties, so should be considered "designer toys".
That aside I agree with Jan, I don't see why all toys can't be featured on rotocasted. With a few tags users can soon filter out what they want to see, and what they don't want to see.
And please don't think any of my comments are derogatory to any particular toys, like I said I love all toys, and love all collectors. Its more a question of what the site is designed to be, and only Sergey can answer that question. It is after all his site. -
10 years ago
That's right. I thought this site was specifically for designer toys. I'm sorry. Does this mean that all kinds of toy objects are allowed here?
That would actually make things a lot easier. -
10 years ago
Where is the line drawn though? Do those loom band sets belong on here because they're popular kid's toys? Do the toys I get in those vending machines at the mall belong here? Does Barbie belong here? Do Skylander figures belong here?
Think about it. Being open to all toy types is ridiculous. -

I think it needs to be approached kind of what like Coop said, this site should be for BRANDS that were CREATED with the designer toy collector in mind. Lego and Playmobile are not part of this. Maybe they have changed some of their business tactics to aim at new demos but they are kids toys. Plain and simple. Funko on the other hand (as much as I personally do not like them) were initially created as a designer toy brand with a more mass appeal. 5-6 years ago, Funko couldn't give their stuff away at SDCC, now it is an entirely different beast. But the heart of Funko, despite the licensing, is aimed at collectors.
As for the argument with if licensing toys need to go, then KR license figs should be taken off as well. I would argue that the same way and say that despite the license, Kidrobot is still a designer toy company and anything under that brand is a designer toy. -

I've been thinking about this a lot lately, and I just realized that this site might be aimed towards designer toys only. The Playmobils uploaded before were deleted after a few days. I know that a random user can't delete all traces of a toy on Rotocasted, for we would have a lot less toys on the site.
Also, I don't think the term "designer toy" is outdated. It has many subcategories that keep it alive. -

I can't believe this conversation is still going on!
Lets face it, we all know the answer whether we want to admit it or not….PlayMobil has no place on Rotocasted if we allow this to continue then we'll end up with care bears and Teddy Ruxpin next!

good luck, I can't imagine these are easy to come by and if you do, I hope you have a very big wallet. I held one in my hand, wasn't impressed. It was cute as hell but was a very unrefined 3d printed piece

hahaha, well all i'm responding to was that announcement i read once regarding a de plume release, they told the public never to be producing De Plume (at least 1/6) if i remembered correctly. I guess when money is to made no platform or artist is safe!

Technically these shouldnt be de plumes and NOM 4th, Blanc and 27 were all members of NOM and not De Plumes themselves. However they are a popular iconic figure plus you cant take anything Ash says as gospel anymore :(

these De Plumes went back in time just so they wouldn't be the last ones
