He's nice. But does anyone else feel that a massive entertainment company like Disney labeling some of their products as 'designer toys' is trying to muscle in on the phenomena that by its nature has something of an outsider ethos? I mean Disney & Co. have been making toys for, well forever, yet when the art toy movement comes along they conveniently hitch a ride. Or am I just a snob!!! O_O
I do have to say I own a Cheshire Cat and I love him, but then it isn't really a Disney character though they do own the rights...
I'm shocked Mindstyle has slowed down on riding the Disney train. That was their little cash cow

I'm just saying Disney is very mainstream while the artists I like are the ones who made the designer toy movement what it is today like Frank Kozik, Andrew Bell, Kathie Olivas, Nathan Jurevicius. Maybe not outsider art but certainly edgy, strange and at times dark...
Designer toys aren't mainstream yet. Maybe in the US it might seem like it, but in Europe they really aren't mainstream - although their popularity is growing fast.

Aren't the Toy Story characters designed by Pixar? Disney (Walt Disney Pictures) is the huge distributor for the films etc.
And these being made my Medicom in my opinion make them designer toys to some extent.
Peeps buying them tells them they made the right decision to "hitch a ride" ;)

Really? Then there is hope yet, yay! I live in Australia and only a relatively small number of people are into art toys...
