This is one of my favourite toys.
The image doesn't show it but it also comes with a sparky head and beautiful packaging / booklet.

The tail is string, ears are a heavy coated fabric and the arms are a tightly wounded bendable / posable rope

so, I sculpted this figure, looked a little too small but I really liked how it turned out.
So I tried again, very slightly larger but I didn't get the proportions just right.
So now I'm sculpting it a third time, at about a ten prercent increase from the original...

Thanks again toasted678 for the link. I have just checked back and managed to pre-order a set.
Joust found out they are 400% and 100%. Anyone know the edition run? -
14 years ago
Should be 500 as usual.
-
Could be 1000 though. Other Kaws pieces have been in runs of 1000. Plus Disney is involved, so it might be larger than normal.
-
Not sure about the partnership with Disney. its not the same if you ask!
-
I want to know if anyone thinks this would be worth dropping 400-500 bones on in terms of re-sale value. Anyone got an opinion?
-
Haha why, are you buying it to sell it?
-
No, not at all I was just wondering. I'm sure if I got my hands on one of these it wouldn't leave them.
-
$400 is a good deal as these skyrocketed in value. $500 isn't a steal but I've seen them break the $600 mark on several occasions. Hold out for one that's going up on auction on eBay and you should be able to land one for under $500.
I think the price has more or less settled in the short term but will continue to rise. -
14 years ago
Yeah, I noticed that on the listings I did see. I definitely will hold out. Thanks for the advice!

wow. I'd be really pissed if someone scammed me like this, but the guys on the boards are brutal!
I really hope you get your toy, Shank, and that this guy will deal with whatever problem he has!
it's sad really. I tend to believe him about the drug problem because if he thought for two seconds he would figure out you can single him out on the boards, and at least he stepped up. -

Nope, it's one of a kind original.

Isn't a one of kind original a custom?

This is a really good conversation to have. A CUSTOM can be a one-of-a-kind original (especially if the customizer has gone above and beyond to make something new out of the original toy). However, a ONE-OF-A-KIND ORIGINAL is not typically going to be a CUSTOM. In the case here, the talented Jimmy Foo has created an original figure with his own original sculpt. This would only be a custom, if Jimmy writes that underneath the purple, there is a Munny in there somewhere :)

There are talks in multiple toy commentaries on Rotocasted. My reasoning for what is classified a custom:
Custom: Uses another toy as its platform, including re-casting parts. Therefore customising a toy.
Original: Creating a sculpt without use of another toy as its platform. An original toy. -
14 years ago
I feel there is a difference between "customizing" and "custom". I would define taking a platform toy and painting it or making it your own would be customizing or customization, however, making your own one of a kind toy would be a custom (as in custom made). IMHO.
-
As toy design as we know it is relatively new, it may be helpful to reference an older practice to define the nature of the beast.
In furniture design, the term "custom made" tends to be only used if you were commissioned to do a unique piece for someone. The person commissioning the piece would set the design specifications for the custom made furniture, not the designer.
One of a kind pieces get made in furniture design often and are not considered custom pieces but new designs.
English language seems to lack the words required for this subject :P The interpretation of words like 'original' and 'custom' can easily become out of context. -

I think in this instance the term 'custom' is being confused with customised. Imo, to customise is to take an existing object and make alterations. A custom is essentially a commission with some kind of client brief. However, I regard this piece to be neither of the above as it's an original design....soooo... Between Jeremy and CoMus I'd say it's pretty much covered.
