Sorry, shouldn't say he doesn't do work. Designing and marketing are work. He doesn't do the casting or manufacturing.

ah, makes sense now.. i remember reading on the KR boards a couple of months ago: 'kozik started resin casting not too long ago' (or something a long the lines of that).. i guess i took it too literal and thought he actually hand casted all these pieces.
thx shank! -

Ya, he actually completely molded and cast these.

So what is the bird dog lady lacking? What is the quality that a Formal or an Uglydoll has that Parra's figures don't? They're all simple, clean sculpts, with simple paint jobs. What separates them?
-
-
Needs 2 big bunny ears, and a Kidrobot logo on the bottom of its foot.
-
Personally I appreciate Parra. I don't own any of his pieces, but I find the clean, simple form and curves of his style appealing.
-
I like his cheeky/filthy sense of humour, and the french styling. Magnifique!
-

-
@shank, his faces and boots bother bother me. just not my style.. and it also bothers me that his feet look broken (ive had a compound fracture, so maybe that has something to do with it..) reminds me of something my grandma would collect. Please keep formal outta this, he is a gentlemen ;)

My love for Parra started out with his graphic work. To see this translated in a 3D form, is just amazing for the fans! Also, I think it's great that his typical and recognizable style (typo & character) seems timeless after almost being unchanged for 10 years.

Anyone else think this looks like a weak, rushed, cash-in series?
-
I think that the postapoc series would have been more interesting if Kidrobot had invited different designers. DrilOne for example.
-
This is the least original series they ever released. Even the recycled designs have been reused multiple times in the series.
So I fully agree Dan. -

I thought he was pretty boring to begin with, but how could anyone design 60+ Dunnies and stay super fresh and original?
-
-
True dat, Shank. To be fair I like Huck, but have only ever really liked his customs, which I could never EVER afford.
-
I don't fully undertand the whole huck craze. I like some of his work. The Raku dunny for example was great. But this series isn't really doing it for me. A post apocalyptic dunny series could have been a cool idea if they had used more interesting artists. Plus Huck already had an entire dunny series to himself.
-
I'm not a huge dunny collector, but every time a new series comes out I usually see one or two that I get excited about. The only two that I've skipped entirely are this one and Gold Life. Just... not interesting. I think they make sense more as action figures than as art toys.
-
damn, i didnt know there were so many huck nay-sayers on here. makes me feel like im not the only one! i think this series is pretty unoriginal.. with the exception of the mecha dunnys.. those will be fun to paint =)

Most of the `larger` editions eventually end up at retailers
-
-
@lordsketch - I'll cross my fingers for you
@minty - out of curiosity, do coarse test the water on there own website first? See if they can sell out direct to the consumer, and cut out the middle man? Then sell whats left to retailers. Or is it predetermined that a certain percentage are offered out to select third party sellers? -
-
angel
-
353 606 632
yeah it's kinda like you say. Coarse (and many others) rather sell directly to the consumer. They always keep an amount aside for possible problems and if the product is not really popularthey will offer the leftovers to select retailers when their customers that ordered have it,

I'm feeling a lot of kaws stuff. But his pricing criteria scares me away.. :/
-
That's exactly how I feel. The last resting place was $600. This one is $300, which compared to $600 seems like a bargain, but I still can't afford it.
-
The last Resting Place was priced at $320 if I'm not mistaken, but there were some shops which bought the toy and flipped it for said price.
-
Oh. That makes sense. I only ever saw it listed for $600, but $320 makes a lot more sense
-
i feel you dunny ninja, still too much for me.. and damn, shops flipping kaws pieces?! i really do not understand the hype of these things.. bootlegs all day for me =)
-
*sighs, and shakes head*
-
you guys can feel however you'd like about it, everyone is entitled to their own opinion.. i personally hate all the 'hypebeast' shit, and i would classify kaws stuff as just that.. its also ungodly expensive, i dont care if its 'art', food, a car, or toilet paper. im smarter than that to buy (severely) over priced things, there is a limit for me (for a reason): all of my other hobbies are more expensive than collecting toys, believe it or not.. ;)
-
The original price is very reasonable, for the size, quality and limited number of the piece. Just because something is popular, and the after market price goes up, doesn't make it expensive. Just makes it even more awesome. Don't hate the players hate the game.
-
jazzy, I completely see where you are coming from... but I still think I'm going to buy the Ryniak Dunny..

And here we are adding to it!
-
-
angel
-
381 1089 1433
but Jazzy, the "players" decide how many to make, and they usually opt to make the pieces extreremly limited eveb though they know demand is much much higher *exactly* in order to keep market and after-market prices high.
It's the reason I dislike the "fine art market" and love the toy world - afforadble art for everyone! -
-
This is all a silly argument.
In any collecting there is cheap, affordable and expensive. No one said at the beginning of time that the toy world would only be cheap or affordable - it's a market like any other and it all depends what we are willing to pay. -
12 years ago
If I had the money, I would be willing to pay it... I just don't have $300 right now

I love KAWS, mostly because the toys (some of them) are awesome. The '99 Companion is the Best Art Toy Ever Made, and I will have one by golly. But I'll admit, part of the appeal for me is all the pomp and circumstance. The drops at noon on Friday, the controversies, the freakin balloon in the Macy's parade. If I'm going to be part of the toy world, I gotta have my feet in the KAWS pool.
-
-
It's an interesting point though, if Original Fake produced say half a million of these, so they would be cheap enough (say £20) and accessible for everyone to own, and have one in their house. Would they still be as cool/desirable?
Are we saying that the only way to make something fine art, is to limit the production quantity? -
12 years ago
I don't think it would be near as cool if it was easy to get. The thrill in collecting something so limited is part of what makes you collecting so fun (for me at least). That said, if they wanted to make enough of these so that they could drop the price to about $150, I would be much happier.
-
@ jazzy.. i dont care how many of a certain toy is made, i collect what i like (granted its not a stupid ass price, like all kaws pieces).. some people just cant seem to grasp this and are edition size whores (hense why i like bootlegs).. i do it for myself, and myself only.. and you should too ;)
with that said, ya'll can have these kaws pieces.. im not going to let that fool bend me over like that and take all my money, ill leave that up to everyone else who collects his stuff. im over this materialistic/elitist hypebeast shit and have been since day one.. -
